Solar NV Honored at Local Solar Project Ribbon Cutting

Ribbon cutting for Silver State North Solar Installation near Primm, NV.Solar NV was present at the recent ribbon cutting of Southern Nevada’s newest solar project, Solar State North. Enbridge’s 50MW solar photovoltaic project, now commercially operational, generates enough powSolar NV receives a $5,000 donation for their work promoting renewable energy.er to serve about 9,000 homes and displacing about 42,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide. At the ribbon cutting for this new clean energy project near Primm, Nevada, Solar NV was honored with a $5,000 donation for their work advocating renewable energy, including projects like Silver State North.

Sustaining Las VegasOur speaker for November is Marco Velotta, City of Las Vegas, Office of Sustainability.

The meeting will highlight the sustainability initiatives enacted by the City of Las Vegas. The presentation will show the scope of the sustainability plans and actions, but will concentrate on the transportation and renewable energy efforts that are underway to help reduce the city’s dependence on fossil fuels.

Marco Velotta is a member of the City of Las Vegas Office of Sustainability and assists with the implementation of the City’s Sustainability initiative. He graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2006 with a BS in Geography, Math minor and a Master’s in City Planning in 2008. Marco presently assists with the management of the City’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant allocation, the City’s Green Building Program, and implementation of the City’s Sustainable Energy Strategy, including the planning and development of renewable energy and conservation projects and community energy efficiency programs.

We look forward to seeing you for this opportunity to learn about all the great green things and sustainable development going on in Las Vegas!

Steve Rypka lives a low-carbon lifestyle.Our speaker for October is Steve Rypka, green living consultant, writer and practitioner. He’ll be sharing his perspective about the practicalities of using the sun to power an electric vehicle.

Steve will discuss his decision to purchase one of the first Nissan Leaf’s sold in Nevada, plus a lot of other details about incentives, charging, batteries, vehicle range and maintenance. He has been happily driving on 100% sunshine since February. Learn how his investment in a roof-mounted photovoltaic system over seven years ago is not only paying for itself, but has become one of the best and most ethical financial investments imaginable.

Steve Rypka is a founding member, past board member and past president of Solar NV. He has been a strong advocate of renewable energy and green building for many years. His Green Living column has been published every other week in the Las Vegas Review Journal  for over six years. After the presentation, Steve will show the Leaf and answer questions. We hope to see you  there!

Bryce AlsteadOur speaker for September is Bryce Alstead of Holland and Hart who represented Sempra in the development of the large Copper Mountain solar project.

Mr. Alstead provides clients with the responsive counsel they need in complex land use and water rights matters, and in real estate and energy transactions. Clients in the energy transmission, mining, geothermal, solar, real estate development, and resort industries count on his guidance. Regarding the Copper Mountain projects, he handled the real estate, land use (City Council hearings), and construction contract work for each of the CMS 1, 2, and 3, projects. He is primarily a real estate and permitting lawyer for energy projects (primarily solar, geothermal, and transmission).

Working from the firm’s Reno and Las Vegas offices, Mr. Alstead has experience covering a broad range of land use issues common to Nevada, such as zoning changes, special use permits, water rights issues, and variances. Mr. Alstead’s experience also covers the areas of gaming and liquor licensing, development agreements, municipal leasing for energy generation and transmission projects, and open meeting law counseling. While he typically represents project proponents, Mr. Alstead also has successfully opposed land use applications.

On August 25, 2012 Solar NV, friends and supporters honored an individual in the Nevada community who has made significant contributions to a secure energy future through innovations in conservation and/or renewable energy in Nevada.

Through her work with the Sierra Club and contributions to the Clean Energy Project, Lydia has established her mission to bring renewable energy to Nevada. We are honored to add Lydia Ball to the distinguished list of Nevada Renewable Energy Leadership Award recipients.

Solar NV Scholarship Award

In addition, the winner of the 2013 Solar NV Scholarship recipient was announced. Kathryn Weavil, a senior at UNLV studying Environmental Science with a minor in Solar and Renewable Energy, was presented with a $2,500 scholarship to help further her studies.

Each year, Solar NV awards a scholarship for the following year to an outstanding University of Nevada – Las Vegas (UNLV) undergraduate or graduate student who is pursuing a future in the Solar / Renewable Energy Industry.

Congratulations to Lydia Ball and Kathryn Weavil. Solar NV appreciates your contributions – past, present and future – to improve the lives of the citizens of Nevada and beyond through the use of clean, renewable energy.

The 2012 Crinis Awards Banquet and silent auction was a great event enjoyed by all. Thanks to everyone who turned out and to those organizations who sponsored the event!
