DesertSol set to open at Springs Preserve

DesertSolBy Chelsea Sendgraff

February is set to bring a new love to the city of Las Vegas.

DesertSol, the beloved house that won first place in America and second place in the world in the U.S. Department of Energy’s 2013 Solar Decathlon, will be welcomed to the Las Vegas Springs Preserve. While no exact date has been set, according to the Team Las Vegas Solar Decathlon 2013 Facebook page, the house will open to the public this month.

The multi-award winning home built by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas’ Solar Decathlon team features amenities such as photovoltaic solar panels, low flow ultra-efficient water fixtures, and a ductless heat pump system that eliminates energy losses. Over sixty UNLV students worked on the 700-square-foot house turned exhibit where the public will be able to learn about sustainable living.

Currently being built within the Botanical Gardens, DesertSol is awaiting LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Platinum certification. The home will be in great company at the Springs Preserve as it will be the eighth LEED building on the premises.
